For WAAD, take time to listen to autistic people share their stories on the Autistic Self Advocacy Network. This is also a good thing to do any day of the year. The ASAN slogan is “nothing about us without us”. Sometimes when public figures discuss autism, they only have allistic* representatives (such as the allistic organization Autism Speaks). This is bad for autistic people because it usually results in a misrepresentation being painted of what it’s like living with autism. In fact, it’s a generally bad idea for anyone to speak for another group without letting that group have its own voice in the matter. So for WAAD, do something more than shining a blue light - take time to listen.
