we are all beautiful in different ways.

If by “different” you mean “uniformly conforming to thin-centric beauty standards”, then yes.

Tim Minchin does not get a free pass just because he’s a famous skeptic!

Yes, he’s actually funny, and smart, and on our side.  How awesome to finally be understood and represented in popular culture!

That is, unless we’re fat or have fat children.

Then we get shit like this (anti-fat hate, click at your own risk): http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archives/2011/01/20/do-not-feed-donuts-to-your-obese-children  Lindy West wrote a good rebuttal you can read here: http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archives/2011/02/11/hello-i-am-fat

Humanists, atheists, skeptics, freethinkers alike: if you are one of those people who claim to have a benevolent pro-human moral code, then act like it.  Fat people are people, and anti-fat hate is anti-people hate.  Just like we hate it when Christians “love the sinner but hate the sin”, we need to stop fooling ourselves when we “shame the fat but not the fat person”.  It doesn’t work that way.

We’re all familiar with Dan Savage’s It Gets Better campaign.  Well, for fat people, it does not get better, it gets worse, because we make it worse.  Every time we give people a free pass for being like us, instead of calling them out on their anti-fat bullshit, we’re making it worse.

The question is, are we going to own up to this responsibility?  Or are we going to give ourselves a free pass as well?

In response to this.

Self-loathing is not the only option, contrary to popular belief.  There is nothing wrong with being okay with your body, whatever shape it is.

Quote, described below.

"The only thing that anyone can diagnose, with any certainty, by looking at a fat person, is their own level of stereotype and prejudice toward fat people.”

-Marilyn Wann, “Fat Studies: An Invitation to Revolution”
