Response to the “Religious Antagonist”

In his latest episode, Mike approaches a homeless man and offers him $20 to scratch the word “God” off the sign he is holding. The man refuses. Mike questions the man’s rationality. Why is he refusing real money for a ‘fairy tale’? The man’s wife gets involved and also refuses. Mike engages them both. Supposed hilarity ensues as Mike tries to get the couple to give up their faith in a higher power for the temptation of $20.

I’m sorry, Mike, I don’t think this was the reaction you were expecting when you sent this to us but I think this is a cruel, cold and pointless tactic and I am struggling hard to understand why you think this is a) meaningful or b) something we’d appreciate.

If you’re looking for ways to yarnbomb but not too creative (or only know how to knit scarves), some people are knitting simple winterwear and hanging them from trees or whatnot in parts of the city where homeless or those lacking may find them.

[Warning: rape and abuse] Rogi took part in a fundraiser for homeless people yesterday, where another volunteer made inappropriate comments about people like her. She’s a real person living a real life with real joys and real pains, and then some asshat with a camera and a microphone thinks he can turn it all into one big sex joke? Disgusting how some people seek to detach themselves from their humanity. “But it’s okay! It’s for charity!” Hell no, we either altogether build a future full of dignity and respect, or our efforts are BULLSHIT.

TDOR is what I call the first day of “transgender winter” each year. It’s important to remember that employment discrimination, loss of income and loss of family also result in the loss of one’s home in many cases. Underemployment does not provide a suitable home, food for sustenance or even basic health care. Working in the underground economy helps along many transgender individuals but also puts those working in it at high risk of violence. Many are living on the streets in the cold of winter with no place to go. Emergency shelters that have open beds are usually only available overnight between dusk and dawn, and most transitional shelters are already filled until spring. And those are just the shelters that accept trans people and treat them in the proper manner.

As we remember those whom we have lost, we need to remember why we lost them and call for equal rights and treatment. Activists now have tools in their hands to help change the way we live and how we can help our homeless. We need to become visible in the places where we are not known and remain visible where we have already been seen. TDOR is a sad day for all, but it also should be the day when we call for better.
